Careers
Careers Education All learners receive IAG (information, advice and guidance) and are encouraged to undertake work experience (either long term or short term, depending on their interests). We collaborate with local companies and organisations that provide group work experience opportunities (such as animal care at The Park in Knowle West). We also work in partnership with local further education colleges and training providers. By building trusted relationships in advance, we help ensure that post-16 transitions are as smooth as possible. We arrange taster days and tours and host mentors who work with students throughout the year. This helps students feel confident that they have a range of sustainable progression options. From April onwards each year, LPW regularly uses a classroom at our local college to create an immersive experience of college life. This is important for our learners given that many of them need a multi-sensory approach to learning. All students have tailored careers advice and meet with an IAG level 7 adviser who creates individual support plans to help them to achieve their outcomes and next steps. We also partner with the Southwest Careers Service to meet the Gatsby Benchmarks. We have a dedicated careers lead.
At LPW School careers education and employability is integrated into the curriculum with a ‘whole school approach’. There is a programme of careers education for all year groups delivered through lessons in our Employability qualification as well as PSHE and whole-year activities with students off-timetable.
We aim to raise aspirations and allow students to achieve their own personal potential. Students are encouraged to develop employability skills and are given information, advice and guidance, to enter into the world of work, at a level suited to them offering an equal opportunity to all.
Students will spend many years in the world of work and the need to be equipped with employability skills and the ability to confidently make decisions about their futures is very important.
