Behaviour

At LPW, we are committed to creating a respectful and inclusive learning environment through a Positive Behaviour and Relationships Policy that prioritises understanding, support, and accountability. We adopt a trauma-informed approach, recognising that all behaviour is a form of communication and that each learner’s actions are shaped by their experiences. Our approach ensures that responses to behaviour are fair, transparent, and focused on resolution, rather than punishment. As a zero permanent exclusion school, we do not adopt a punitive approach but instead work proactively with learners to address challenges, build positive relationships, and create a safe and supportive environment where everyone can thrive. To support learners in preparing for their next steps, we have a stepped behaviour policy that helps them understand expectations beyond LPW, particularly in post-16 education and training. This structured approach supports a smooth transition, equipping learners with the skills and behaviours needed for their future success.

Our approach to behaviour

At LPW School, our core values and purpose are rooted in supporting young people’s mental health. We are committed to challenging the outdated and punitive stigma around ‘behaviour’, instead championing the understanding that a child’s actions are shaped by key neurological drivers. These drivers are influenced by the experiences children encounter in their early lives, which can be either enabling or limiting. As primary carers and educators, it is our duty to empower our young people to strengthen their capacity for self-regulation. Our Relationships and Behaviour Policy provides staff with detailed guidance on the impact of trauma on education, the effects of insecure attachment, and the core principles and philosophies that underpin our school.

We believe in fostering positive behaviour that encourages personal responsibility and social engagement. This is achieved through a structured and rewarding system where students earn points for a variety of achievements, including demonstrating positive behaviour, making academic progress, attending regularly, and actively participating. These points accumulate daily and contribute towards the afternoon curriculum offer. Students who consistently engage with their learning and contribute positively to the school community are rewarded. Importantly, our system is flexible, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed. Each day is a fresh start, giving learners the chance to make good choices that lead to success.
